What’s the difference between an Auto Repair Shop and an Auto Body Shop?

It’s important to understand at least the basics about your car, and that includes where you would go to repair different parts of it! Having said this, we are here to help explain to you the differences between an auto repair shop and an auto body shop. It is common among car owners to think everything concerning car maintenance or repair is the work of a mechanic; they believe once it is an automobile problem, the mechanic is the first go-to person. While that may be true in some cases, it’s best to think of it as you would a doctor. For example, would you go to a stomach doctor for an ear infection? Probably not. So, it’s important to note that you should not go to a mechanic for a dented bumper.

What does an Auto Repair Shop do?

Here, the mechanic is the one making things happen here. When your car has an internal problem, that happened without a collision, you are hundred percent right to take your car to an auto repair shop. They are equipped with the right knowledge and expertise to remove and replace damaged components to restore your car to it’s perfect working condition.

When it comes to evaluating all the mechanical systems, and making necessary repairs or replacements, an auto repair shop is the best handler. When you realize you need an engine light checked or you have been noticing some noises emanating from your engine or your tires, you are making the right decision to call your auto repair mechanic.

Basically, in auto repair shops, cars are repaired internally by auto mechanics who have been trained to handle the mechanical and electrical parts of a car, primarily concerning the engine and functionality.

What does an Auto Body Shop do?

Let’s talk about aesthetics, the body balance and general appearance of a car; the auto body shop is the place to be for all of these. When there is a collision and the fender or bumper has been affected, or after the smallest of accidents, you wouldn’t want to go to an auto repair mechanic – you should first go to an auto body shop.

They are the ones who work on the appearance of the vehicle and the initial the evaluation. If there are body repairs to be done, an auto body shop is best equipped to handle those. Some people call them panel-beaters and painters. They do holistic touches to your vehicle and make it look like it has never collided. They are experts when it comes to interior cleaning, dented fenders, cracked windshield and all forms of paint jobs.

It’s all about balance; your car will inevitably need work over time in both of these facilities. Hopefully this helps get a better idea of when you need to go where.

Thanks for helping me learn more about auto repair and auto body shops. I actually didn’t know that an auto body shop can help if the body balance of the car is off. I’m kind of interested to learn how you can tell if a car isn’t balanced properly, especially if that’s an issue that can be fixed quickly through some body repairs.
