I’m sure you’ve heard the term “deductible” before, but maybe you’re a new Arizona driver and haven’t learned the ins and outs of car insurance, yet.  Or maybe you’re a seasoned driver who had your first auto accident and you are just looking to brush up on your insurance knowledge.  No matter what’s brought you here, just know that you’re not alone in feeling some confusion about car insurance.  Many drivers we’ve met at our O’Rielly Collision Centers in Green Valley and Tucson have questions about their auto insurance plans.  To help you understand better, here is our guide to car insurance deductibles.

Your deductible is determined when you sign up for an insurance policy.
When you first apply for car insurance, you will need to select an amount for a deductible.  If you should get into a car accident in which you would want to apply your insurance coverage, the deductible is the amount of money you’ll be responsible for before your coverage will kick in.  For instance, if your deductible is $300 and your accident repairs cost $1,500, you will need to pay the $300 out of pocket yourself and then your insurance company will pay the remaining $1,200.

Be sure to choose the best deductible amount for your budget.
It’s important that you take the time to select a deductible amount that works best for your situation and your budget.  The main benefit of choosing a higher deductible amount is that it will lower your car insurance premium.  However, if you find yourself getting into frequent minor accidents, a smaller deductible with a higher premium might be more affordable for you.  Examine your income, your budget, your location, and your car’s value when selecting the deductible for your insurance policy.  If you live in a city where accidents are common or if you’re an inexperienced driver, you may want a lower deductible.  The same goes if you don’t tend to have the extra money in your budget to cover a high deductible.  If you’re an experienced driver with the budget for it, however, it might be wise to elect the higher deductible.  Don’t hesitate to talk it over with your insurance agent.  A great auto insurance agent should be able to help you through this process during your sign up.
